Helping children reconnect with real-world play in a screen-driven generation
Childhood has always been defined by one simple idea: play. Running outside, getting dirty, exploring, creating, and discovering the world through experience. Yet today, childhood is increasingly mediated by screens. Studies show that 90% of children are connected to digital devices, and screen usage among kids aged 6–10 has grown dramatically over the last decade, with many now spending around six hours per day in front of screens.1, 2
Digital platforms are designed to capture attention through reward loops and constant stimulation, which can make it difficult for children to disengage. Over time, excessive screen exposure has been linked to challenges in social interaction, emotional regulation, and mental well-being. The challenge isn’t eliminating technology from children’s lives — it’s finding ways to guide its use so that kids can reconnect with creativity, curiosity, and real-world experiences.
iupi is an iOS and iPadOS application designed to help parents guide their children’s free time with intention. Instead of competing with digital devices, the app uses technology to encourage real-world activities for children aged 8–11, turning everyday tasks and creative moments into engaging challenges.
The app operates as a dual-device ecosystem: parents manage activities from their iPhone, while children interact with a playful, gamified interface on the iPad. Through CloudKit synchronization, parents can assign activities such as drawing, reading, or helping at home. As children complete tasks, they earn virtual coins that can be redeemed for meaningful real-world rewards — motivating them to step away from passive screen time and rediscover the joy of play.
