A social Apple TV experience that brings cultures together through conversation and shared interaction
Culture shock is a common emotional challenge faced by university exchange students when adapting to a new country. Differences in language, social norms, and everyday habits can lead to feelings of isolation, homesickness, anxiety, and reduced confidence when interacting with others.
Although exchange students have access to abundant information about the host culture, these resources are mostly passive and rarely create opportunities for meaningful interaction between local and international students. The real challenge is the lack of opportunities for natural social interaction that allow students to share their culture, connect with others, and feel more comfortable in their new environment.
Cultural Storm is a social experience built with SwiftUI for Apple TV, designed to turn cultural exchange into a shared, in-person interaction. Instead of consuming information passively, players gather in the same room and take turns answering questions about their countries — from traditions and everyday habits to surprising cultural norms.
Each round sparks conversations that help locals better understand international students while giving exchange students a chance to share their identity and feel welcomed. By encouraging face-to-face interaction in a relaxed, living-room setting, the experience promotes social connection — helping reduce feelings of isolation often associated with culture shock and creating opportunities for friendships to emerge during exchange programs.
